The borders of the neighborhood are generally accepted to be Ashland to the east (at 1600 W), the above-grade Bloomingdale Line to the north (at 1800 N), Division to the south (at 1200 N), and Western Avenue to the west (at 2400 W). Both the East Village and Ukrainian Village are to the south, Humboldt Park is to the west, and Bucktown is to the north.Chicago and Wicker Park reached a nadir in the 1970s, a decade when the city overall lost 11% of its population; during the 1970s, hundreds of insurance arsons were reported in Wicker Park, and many small factories in the area (many in woodworking) closed or moved away. Efforts by community development groups to stabilize the community through new affordable-housing construction in the 1980s coincided with the arrival of artists attracted by the neighborhood's easy access to the Loop, cheap loft space in the abandoned factories, and distinctly urban feel.

Bucktown gets its name from the large number of goats raised in the neighborhood during the 19th century. A male goat is a buck.

Its boundaries are the Chicago River to the east, Western Avenue to the west, the above-grade Bloomingdale Line to the south and West Fullerton Avenue to the north. It is primarily residential, with a mix of older single family homes, new builds with edgy architecture, and converted industrial loft spaces.

In the last quarter of the 20th Century, a growing artists' community led directly to widespread gentrification, which brought in a large population of young professionals. Bucktown is directly north from Wicker Park.

The community area and neighborhood are named for General John A. Logan who served in the Civil War, and later in Congress. One of the most striking intersections in the city, the square itself is a circular green space located at the center of a traffic circle formed by the junction of Kedzie and Logan Boulevards and Milwaukee Avenue. At the center of the circle is the Illinois Centennial Memorial Column, built in 1918 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Illinois' statehood. The monument, designed by Henry Bacon, famed architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC and sculpted by Evelyn Longman, is a single 70-foot tall marble Doric column topped by an eagle, in reference to the state flag. Reliefs surrounding the base depict figures of Native Americans, explorers, farmers and laborers intended to show the great changes experienced during the state's first century.

In conventional use, the neighborhood's borders include Western Avenue to the east, Pulaski Road to the west, Armitage Avenue to the North and Chicago Avenue to the south. The name may be used to describe the area as a community or the actual 207 acre (0.8 km²) park itself.The park was named for Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist.Most of the neighborhood was annexed into the city in 1869, the year the park was laid out.Gentrification continues apace. It is especially evident in the four blocks closest to Western Avenue, particularly between Armitage and North avenues, and North and Chicago avenues. Many new single-family homes have replaced the dilapidated multi-dwelling units there.

"West Ukrainian Village" and "Smith Park" are both terms used to describe the small section of Ukrainian Village that lies west of Western Avenue, between Grand Avenue and Chicago Avenue.Although Ukrainian village continues to be the center of Chicago's large Ukrainian community, the gentrification of West Town is rapidly changing the demographic.

Its boundaries are Division St (1200 N) to the north, Superior Ave (750 N) to the south, Campbell Ave (2500 W) to the west, and Damen Ave (2000 W) to the east.
